Compression fittings
Compression fittings join pipe with a nut and olive, so no soldering or special tools are needed - just two spanners. They suit copper pipe and, with pipe inserts, plastic pipe. Ideal for repairs, isolation points and anywhere a flame is not practical.
FAQs
Do compression fittings need PTFE tape?
Not on the nut thread. Compression joints seal on the olive. Some installers add a little tape or jointing compound on the olive on older pipe.
Can compression fittings be reused?
The fitting body and nut can usually be reused, but fit a new olive each time the joint is remade on new pipe.
How tight should a compression fitting be?
As a guide, hand-tight plus about one full turn with a spanner for a new olive, holding the fitting body still. Nip up a little more only if it weeps.
Can I use compression fittings on gas?
Gas work in the UK must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, who will choose suitable fittings.
